May 10, 2024:

It was one of the most iconic buildings in New York history and only a handful of people had ever been inside it…Until now. Discover the Man, Behind the building. — Jay Myself: Photography, The Bank and Me. A film by Stephen Wilkes. Official Selection of DOCNYC.

Jay Myself is a documentary feature about renowned photographer and artist, Jay Maisel, who, in February 2015 after 48 years, begrudgingly sold his home; the 35,000 square-foot, 100-year-old landmark building in Manhattan known simply as “The Bank.” The film documents Jay’s monumental move through the eyes of filmmaker and Jay’s protege, noted artist and photographer Stephen Wilkes. It is through this intimate lens that the viewer is taken on a remarkable journey through Jay’s life as an artist, mentor and man; a man grappling with time, life, change, and the end of an era in New York City.

Our next premiere is at the Cleveland International Film Festival!

  5. @natashaonis says:

I saw this movie last night at Hot Docs theatre. It was amazing. I’m so glad that the filmmaker documented this unique space, all the stuff and how Jay related to it.

  6. Consider myself fortunate to have met Jay in Mumbai during New School 2005.
He landed here a day before the event, went clicking around town and shared some images the next day….
In that one day, Jay showed us “our Mumbai” in a new light that most of us who spent a life time here cud never visualize!
Hats off to this great artist and wishing him all the very best.

  7. On of the highlights of my time as ASMP president was having dinner with Jay and his wife at his home in that bank building.

    Where to see it?

  9. Awesome… I recently saw mapplethorpe’sdocumentary as well… I’ll be seeing this one for sure

  10. Nice work! I've always liked Jay's work. But Jesus, I never knew it took a room full of chromes to get it done. Reminds me of the photogs that want to shoot a video of a subject and take single images for their still photos.

Thanks for making the film and bringing us inside his world. Jay looks like clutterer. Was there a reason he kept all that stuff or did he just like picking up garbage? What is he doing with all that $$ from the building sale? Hope he makes the Maisel Foundation for funding snubbed, ignored and underground artists…especially photogs. (And a poet or two now and again.) They got Gugg for 'above ground' artists, Maisel would be for underground artists. I could use a Lasergraphics 16mm scanner for the half million feet of underground film I got cluttering up my small place.

I had read or heard that someone showed Jay a portfolio of prints and Jay didn't like something so he ripped the print up. If true, Jay sounds like quite a character. Hope Jay has many more years of pushing the button in him!

“If you’re out there shooting, things will happen for you. If your not out there, you’ll only hear about it.” ~ Jay Maisel

So that’s who owns that building. There was always a legend going around about the man who lived in there. From what I understood “he was rich and the place was actually beautiful inside. Never knew that he was a photographer. If I did I would have been banging on the door to intern with him.”

  12. Can’t wait for this to come out, this looks inspirational

  13. Looking forward to see the film. 🙏

  14. @montalvojr says:
