Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked is just wrapping up in London, but the company snuck in a surprise: the Galaxy Ring is getting major sleep health clearance.
During the keynote, Samsung was covering its summer releases, and this particular section involved the Galaxy Watch 9. The company’s newest “all-day, always-on for health” smartwatch has been cleared by the FDA for Sleep Apnea detection; however, Samsung says so will the Galaxy Ring. The company states, “this fall,” its Galaxy Ring will be the “first and only FDA-cleared, over-the-counter ring device for Sleep Apnea risk protection.”
As previously mentioned, the Galaxy Watch 9 features Sleep Apnea detection. Samsung revealed everything about the device and its Ultra 2 partner this morning (July 22). The watch’s Sleep Apnea detection goes further than letting the user know a disruption took place overnight. According to Samsung, its Sleep Apnea detection features AI algorithms for “deeper insights into breathing disruptions during sleep.”
This is an important highlight Samsung discussed during its Unpacked keynote, too.
Huge for the Galaxy Ring
Samsung has been down a long road for Sleep Apnea detection on its wearables. In 2023, the company’s Galaxy Watch received approval from South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety for Sleep Apnea detection, as well as blood pressure monitoring. Consumers in the U.S., and many of us here at Android Central, were eagerly awaiting (and hoping) for FDA approval, too. We had to wait until February 2024 before the FDA gave the all-clear for Samsung’s Galaxy Watch detection.
While approval is all well and good, Sleep Apnea detection didn’t hit our devices until 2025. The feature leverages the watch’s BioActive sensor to alert the user to potential disruptions. Sleep Apnea is a serious medical condition that Samsung is trying to give users better insight into. If left unchecked, it can cause an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, heart failure, cardiac arrhythmia, and more.
Now that Samsung has worked in more of its AI algorithms, we can likely expect more detailed round-ups once this hits the Galaxy Ring. For now, we have the Galaxy Watch 9 to use and see how it works before the fall.
Android Central’s Take
This stunned us during Unpacked. It’s not something we were expecting, and I’m sure all eyes are on Samsung’s smart ring competitors. Sleep Apnea, as I mentioned already, is a serious medical issue. If left unchecked, like anything else, it can worsen. Health awareness is never a bad thing, and for a device (a smart ring) that’s already hard-focused on health, it sounds like a no-brainer.
