Google is following up on a huge milestone for its first quarterly Android 17 update with a beta that fixes issues Pixel users have been vocal about.
Compared to what Beta 6 achieved, Android 17 QPR1 Beta 7 might seem a little lackluster. However, what it does is roll out solutions to problems Pixel users have been reporting for months. Google shared its patch notes on Reddit this week, stating enrolled testers with a Pixel 6 or newer phone can begin downloading it. There are two issues that users have continued to report to Google. Both involve the Pixel Quick Settings menu.
Android Central’s Take
This first Quick Settings problem was reported quite a few times. Google lists seven reports of the issue, each with similar user experiences. This problem has been an issue since January, and February held quite a few reports. I went through, and Google responded to each, but it seems that nailing a fix took longer than anticipated. At one point, I saw a Google response from May that said a fix was coming.
Google states that it’s rolling out a fix for “Battery Share from Quick Settings.” Users have informed Google that Battery Share would “sometimes do nothing” or “sometimes it shows the wireless charging animation.” Another round of Issue Tracker reports states that Battery Share wasn’t working properly. The user says it would “turn off the second I try to turn it on.” What’s more, they state that the UI would incorrectly say their phone is wirelessly charging when “it’s not connected physically to anything.”
While Google has known about this problem since January, a fix is now rolling out for Pixel users in Beta 7 to solve a “failure to start charging” and “repeatedly displayed the charging animation.” Two more fixes are rolling out for Pixel Quick Settings. Please read them below.
Quarterly update soon
- Turning off Wi-Fi created an empty gap between the battery and mobile data icons in the Quick Settings status bar
- A crash in the Quick Settings font size controller that prevented users from adjusting their text size from the quick access panel
The hope is that we’re coming up on Google’s first quarterly release for Android 17. Usually, this takes place around September. Google has been moving quickly with Android 17’s development, so maybe the timeline has changed. Either way, QPR1 Beta 6 rolled out two weeks ago, achieving the major milestone of Platform Stability. This matters for both sides, but more so for developers. Better preparation for their apps to work with this new version can begin. For users, this means we’re one (major) step closer to downloading it.
There was a Quick Settings-related issue in Beta 6, as well. Users reported that there was a visual glitch when “rapidly swiping” through the media carousel. The Quick Settings layout and settings icon were affected by this bug. Now, the company’s rolling out even more fixes for Quick Settings.
