Macclesfield 2 – 1 C Palace

Macclesfield performed the biggest shock in FA Cup history as they stunned holders Crystal Palace 2-1 in the third round.

Goals from captain Paul Dawson and Isaac Buckley-Ricketts either side of half-time steered the National League North side to victory over their esteemed opposition, with 117 places between the sides in the pyramid ahead of kick-off. There has never been a bigger gap between a victorious and a defeated side in the competition that began in 1871.

Yeremy Pino scored a fine late free-kick for Palace at Moss Rose, but it was merely a consolation for the side that lifted the trophy back in May.

It was a win made even more special considering the recent plight of Macclesfield, re-formed just six years ago after the previous iteration of the club was liquidated.

Morrison: Palace were embarrassing

Ex-Palace striker Clinton Morrison on Soccer Saturday:

“Palace were nowhere near good enough. Macclesfield were the better team, they were outstanding.

“Palace were an embarrassment. They thought they could just turn up at Macclesfield. It’s nothing to do with the pitch, it’s about can you go and compete, Macclesfield wanted it more than Palace.”
