New Mask, Same Task: Avengers: Doomsday – Robert Downey Junior as Doctor Doom!

WTF?! Robert Downey Jr. returns to the MCU, but not as Iron Man! He’s been cast as Doctor Doom in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday. Announced at San Diego Comic-Con, Downey Jr. surprised everyone by appearing at the end of the Marvel Studios panel, flanked by Doom Bots, and saying he’ll “see you in two years” with Doomsday. The film is set to hit theaters in May 2026.

How the hell is this gonna work? Is he playing Tony Stark from an alternate Earth? Is this some sort of lookalike nonsense? No one knows! Downey Jr. just teased us with, “New mask, same task. What can I tell ya? I like playing complicated characters.”

And guess what? The Russo Brothers are back to direct both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, dropping in May 2027. Rumors about shifting from a Kang-centric phase to one focused on Doctor Doom seem to be true.
