Uncomfortable Holiday Conversations with Family & Friends — Dr. Jenn’s Den

December 17, 2024:

Do you know how to be with family and friends for the holidays, and also be prepared for uncomfortable or confrontational social or political conversations?

We already got through any Thanksgiving dinner conversations this year (whew!) but now we have all the holiday parties and family gatherings for Christmas, Hanukkah, or other holiday celebrations. And although the intent of these gatherings is to create space and time for connection and joy, it’s not uncommon for folks who start drinking to bring up controversial sociopolitical topics that risk derailing the festive spirit.

I had the opportunity to share insights on what to do in these situations recently in an interview with NBC Houston (KPRC). The specific aim of the interview was to help people navigate potential conflicts over Thanksgiving dinner, but my advice around how to be intentional and plan before gatherings, how to avoid specific topics and focus on other areas, or how to practice generous listening, is relevant now as well.

Check out the video of the interview with news anchor Lisa Hernandez (who was wonderful to speak to!) below.
