Porn and Your Sex Life: Helpful or Harmful?

October 23, 2024:

Since time immemorial, the association between porn and men has been undeniable. Not all porn, and not all men, of course. But even individuals who frown upon it aren’t surprised by the connection. And since it’s more accessible and plentiful than ever before, it’s worth asking about both potential benefits and negative consequences.

The right porn, and the right amount of porn, is uniquely subjective to each individual. And when the correct balance is struck, so can lightning! According to Urology and Men’s Health, positive porn experiences can:

  • Increase libido and desire for a real-life partner
  • Relieve sexual boredom and general stress
  • Improve sexual satisfaction by providing inspiration for real sex and may help couples explore new sexual approaches
  • Help younger men explore their sexuality

However, consuming porn can lead to adverse behaviors such as:

  • Decreased body image
  • Sexual/Porn Addiction
  • Nurturing unrealistic expectations of partners (considering editing, makeup, choreography, plastic surgery, lighting, etc)
  • Less frequent use of condoms or other barrier methods

And while the issues above can affect men, porn can also impact female partners, since porn has also been shown to increase:

  • Misogyny
  • Stress and harm to partner due to unrealistic expectations

If you (and your partner, if you have one) are thriving as a result of consuming porn, good for you!
