X Is Now Letting Users Know If Their Post Gets Reduced Visibility

X confirmed it is now notifying users directly when a post’s reach has been reduced because of local laws in a specific country, rather than leaving that action unexplained.

According to the company, this builds on an existing framework where X already marks content as withheld when it receives a valid legal demand, such as a court order, from an authorized entity in a particular jurisdiction.

The update extends that same notice system further, applying it specifically to cases where a post’s visibility gets limited without being fully removed from the platform. This gives users a much clearer window into moderation decisions that were previously left unexplained, addressing a gap that had existed on the platform for years.

X Respects Local Laws, Adheres to Censorship Controls

X has long maintained that with hundreds of millions of posts shared daily, complying with the individual laws of different countries sometimes means restricting access to certain content in specific regions rather than applying a single global standard.

According to Engadget, the company said such restrictions are limited strictly to the jurisdiction that issued the legal request or where content has been found to violate a country’s local laws, meaning the same post generally remains visible everywhere else in the world.

X has described this approach as part of respecting user expression while still operating within the legal requirements of every country it serves.

X Wants to Be More Transparent to its Users

According to X, transparency plays a central role in protecting freedom of expression, which is why the company said it maintains a formal notice policy for any content that gets withheld.

Upon receiving a request to restrict a post, X said it will promptly notify the affected user and clearly indicate that action is taken within the product itself, unless it is legally barred from doing so, such as when a request comes through a sealed court order.

That same principle now extends to the newly announced reduced visibility notices, giving users insight into a category of moderation that previously offered little to no explanation.
