Opera has quickly become one of the more interesting browsers on Android, adding features like multi-model AI search directly into the browser alongside plenty of other additions. And now, Opera is giving users another reason to give its browser a try.
The company today announced that it’s integrating a travel eSIM directly into Opera for Android. Opera says eligible users will get 3GB of data for free in supported destinations, allowing them to try the service before paying anything. There’s no requirement to enter credit card details to claim the free data either, and users will be able to manage their eSIM directly through the Opera browser.
Opera says that before you can browse the internet while traveling abroad, the obvious first step is getting connected in the first place. That’s where the new eSIM comes in, with Opera offering connectivity across 47 destinations directly through its Android browser.
Similar to other travel eSIMs, you’ll need to install the eSIM from the Opera app before traveling to your destination. Once you arrive, you can simply enable the eSIM and connect to mobile data. The eSIM also stays installed on your phone across multiple trips, so you won’t need to set up a new one every time you travel.
To claim the free eSIM through the Opera app, you’ll first need to make sure you’re running the latest version of Opera for Android. Open the app, tap the Profile icon in the bottom-right corner, scroll down, and select eSIM.
You should then see a Claim button. Tap it, choose the country you’re traveling to, and confirm your selection to activate the free trial.
Of course, you’ll need an Android phone that supports eSIM to use the feature. But if you’re using a recent Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, or another flagship Android phone, there’s a good chance your device already supports it.
For now, Opera says its free 3GB data offer is available to users in the U.S., U.K., Germany, France, Canada, UAE, Brazil, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Poland. The travel eSIM itself, however, can be purchased and used more broadly across its supported destinations.
It’s a a pretty unusual feature to see built directly into a browser, but for anyone who travels frequently, having an eSIM ready to go without downloading another app could come in pretty handy.
