Apple appears to be planning something far more dramatic than its usual yearly refresh for a milestone coming up in 2027.

A new rumor points to a phone that ditches the familiar metal frame entirely, paired with a display bigger than anything the company has shipped before.

Apple’s iPhone 20 Is Getting an All-Glass Design

The rumor from Weibo-based leaker Digital Chat Station describes the 20th anniversary iPhone, internally referenced under the codenames V73 and V74, as featuring glass wrapped across both the front and back of the device.

According to the leaker, Apple’s borderless four curved edge design pairs a flat display panel with a glass cover, using the glass itself to bend light in a way that creates the illusion of a screen with no visible borders at all.

That description lines up closely with earlier reporting from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who has said the phone will use glass on both the front and rear, curving into the sides and leaving only a thin metal band running through the middle. Gurman has referred to the project internally as Glass Wing, describing it as an iPhone X-style redesign taken even further, and has said the device is essentially the phone iOS 26 was built around from the start.

20th Anniversary iPhone’s Massive Screen Size

Beyond the glass exterior, the leaked details point to a noticeably larger display than anything currently available (via CNET). Digital Chat Station has claimed the OLED panel itself has grown in physical size while keeping the same aspect ratio as before, with the extra screen area curving further into the edges of the phone rather than expanding the overall chassis.

Separate reporting has floated a Pro Max display reaching close to 6.96 inches, which would make it the biggest screen ever fitted onto an iPhone if the number holds up.

Other leakers have echoed similar claims, with one describing the size increase as coming specifically from thinner bezels around the display rather than a larger overall body. Rumors have also pointed to Apple potentially removing the front camera cutout entirely, relying on an under-display camera and Face ID system instead, though reports note this remains one of the more technically difficult pieces of the redesign to actually pull off in time.

Apple Skipping to iPhone 20 Next Year

The 20th anniversary framing lines up with when Apple first introduced the iPhone back in 2007, making 2027 the two-decade mark for the product line. That milestone appears to be pushing Apple toward treating next year’s release the same way it treated the iPhone X for the tenth anniversary, when the company introduced an all-screen design, the notch, and Face ID as a replacement for Touch ID.

Reports suggest the anniversary lineup could be limited to two Pro tier models rather than spanning the full range Apple currently sells, replacing what would otherwise be the Pro and Pro Max. Gurman has also noted that an even more ambitious, glass-heavy concept was explored early in development before being scrapped in favor of the current, more manufacturable design.

Even with that scaled-back approach, the leaks so far still describe a device unlike anything Apple has released in the past decade.
