How Religious Beliefs Can Impact Sexuality & Intimacy

The 2000s were quite a time to be a teenager trying to navigate puberty, relationships, and an ever-changing world. As someone who was introduced to religion through the Pentecostal Christian church, messages about bodies, sex, and relationships started long before I fully understood what they meant. I grew up hearing messages about modesty, temptation, and the importance of waiting until marriage. Girls were often taught to dress a certain way to avoid “causing others to stumble,” while conversations about sex tended to focus more on what not to do than on understanding our bodies, desires, or relationships.

Of course, these experiences aren’t unique to Christianity. Many religions offer teachings about sexuality, relationships, and gender roles. For some people, these teachings provide structure, guidance, and a sense of meaning. For others, however, these messages can create confusion, shame, fear, or internal conflict that continues well into adulthood.

If you’ve ever felt guilty for having sexual thoughts, struggled to connect with your body, or found it difficult to enjoy intimacy despite wanting to, you’re not alone. The messages we receive about sexuality during our formative years can have a lasting impact, even after our beliefs evolve or change.
