Samsung is set to fully launch its “Intelligent Eyewear” this fall, and at Unpacked, the company gave us a look at its designs from Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. I’ve already played with prototype Android XR glasses a few times, but this is my first time getting hands-on time with production design models, and I feel like it’s finally starting to come together.
However, given how long it’s taking Google and Samsung to bring these to market, I’m wondering if this new effort can survive the hurdles of a shifting public opinion on smart glasses.
AI meets style
The models I got to handle were not functioning products, but just something to give us a peek at what we’re getting ahead of the actual launch. So while I couldn’t actually use the glasses or even put them on my face, I at least got to hold them and get a feel for them, and I was quite impressed.

Of the new designs I got to see, the Gentle Monster model caught my eye, as I prefer its more classic style, which is closer to the kinds of glasses I wear. However, the Warby Parker glasses looked more stylish, so I’m sure there will still be plenty of appeal for these.
This is why Samsung’s partnerships with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker are so important, as highlighted by James Choi, corporate EVP and head of XR R&D at Samsung.
“They must first be something people really want to wear every day. After all, this is eyewear. People want a natural, stylish fashion item, not a piece of technology on their face,” he said during a round table briefing.
Not only did the glasses look relatively thin; they also felt surprisingly light. Weight is generally a major hurdle when it comes to smart glasses, so lighter glasses mean less chance of fatigue. Furthermore, the relatively thin design helps them look less like tech and blend in as glasses.
Despite their thin, lightweight design, the glasses are still quite durable, and Samsung has ensured “mobile-grade quality assurance,” so they should be able to withstand a fall.
Choi also highlighted something called Power Camp, a joint effort between Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm to optimize battery life and tune software and data streamlining.

And while the glasses are powered by the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1, they will leverage the phone’s memory and compute to provide faster responses and relevant data protections.
As a result, the glasses can get up to an estimated nine hours of mixed-use battery life using the camera, listening to music, and triggering Gemini (and/or Bixby), with an additional seven full charges with the case. You’ll also be able to control them with Wear OS watches and connect with apps like Maps, Interpreter, and Samsung Notes through the glasses.
The elephant in the room…
Public opinion around smart glasses has taken a bit of a turn lately. Despite Ray-Ban Meta glasses being available for years, consumers are starting to turn on them, especially after a few missteps, reports of always-on glasses, and the current smear campaign against the glasses. So how is Samsung approaching the market given the shifting tides?
Choi says privacy is not an afterthought but the core of how Samsung is developing these new glasses. That means including things like the LED indicator light to show when the camera is in use, as well as wear detection to disable the camera if the user takes off the glasses or even covers the LED.
But there is a concern that perhaps more needs to be done. Choi makes it clear that navigating public perception is not easy, especially in different cultures, and recognizes that it’s a shared industry problem. He notes that Samsung is constantly in communication with governments to ensure they’re meeting regulations, and the hope is that they are able to come to some sort of solution while still fostering the development of new technologies such as these.
For now, it sounds like Samsung and Google are doing their part, but the onus is on governing bodies to instill regulations that make everyone happy. I just hope this doesn’t sully the launch of a product I’m genuinely interested in. After all, Google already had its Glasshole moment; it would be a shame for Android XR to also be relegated as just another pair of “pervert glasses.”
