Samsung has been iterating on the same tall-and-narrow Galaxy Z Fold formula for years, but now it seems to be trying something radically different, and the latest leaks indicate that the company isn’t even trying that hard to conceal it anymore.
A fresh leak shared by reliable tipster Ice Universe on X shows what appears to be Samsung’s upcoming wider Galaxy Z Fold 8 next to another model, believed to be the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. The comparison immediately exposes the difference between the two devices. The Ultra seems to adopt Samsung’s common slim foldable design, but the bigger Fold 8 looks shorter, wider, and much more like a regular smartphone when closed, as hinted at by earlier leaks.
That alone would be a big change for Samsung. The Galaxy Z Fold series has long been criticized for the small size of its outer display. This design allowed for a better grip for the device but felt cramped when typing and general use on the cover screen compared to normal flagship phones. The larger Fold 8 seems to directly address that complaint, with rumors suggesting a more tablet-like 4:3 aspect ratio when unfolded.
Spotted in the wild
In a related but separate X post, Ice Universe says that a Samsung employee was seen using the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide in public. Details are limited, but the report may suggest that Samsung is already testing the new design in real-world conditions. If true, it suggests Samsung is becoming more confident in the final look of the device.
It’s getting harder to dismiss the Wide model as a one-off experiment. Dummy units and software assets of One UI 9 have leaked recently, all of them pointing to the same design direction. The device is reportedly equipped with a significantly larger cover screen, an unusually thin body, and a form factor that resembles a small tablet much more when unfolded.
On the other hand, the standard Fold 8 is expected to have a better camera system and better premium hardware, while the wider Fold 8 might have to cut things like cameras to make the device thinner and cheaper.
This is all unofficial for now. But the leaks suggest that Samsung isn’t simply giving the Galaxy Z Fold another year in the sun. It seems the company is gearing up for its biggest foldable shakeup since the original Galaxy Fold debuted.
